For over 10 years now I’ve donated spare computing power towards science in memory of my late mother.
Free software called BOINC runs on various servers which I manage, these in turn connect to the World Community Grid and donate all the power towards the Mapping Cancer Markers project. A snippet from the project website:
Mapping Cancer Markers on World Community Grid aims to identify the markers associated with various types of cancer. The project is analyzing millions of data points collected from thousands of healthy and cancerous patient tissue samples. These include tissues with lung, ovarian, prostate, pancreatic and breast cancers. By comparing these different data points, researchers aim to identify patterns of markers for different cancers and correlate them with different outcomes, including responsiveness to various treatment options.
Currently I have two machines running 24/7 computing results, returning on average 10 results per hour. Whilst it doesn’t sound like much, it all adds up! As of 8th Feb 2022:
- I am position 243 of 4,416 for World Community Grid users and position 2,099 of 150,009 of all grid members across all projects, both for the United Kingdom
- I have accumulated 88,559,633 credits – more than 98.60077% of the UK’s users and 98.96684% than the entire world
- I earn an average of 2,698 points per day or 69,890 a month
- The computer power I’ve donated over the past 10 years is the equivalant to over 69 years
